When most people think about planting season, they think spring. But here in Fayetteville, North Carolina, fall can actually be one of the best times of year to add trees and shrubs to your landscape.
Our relatively mild fall weather gives newly planted trees and shrubs an opportunity to begin establishing their root systems without having to battle the intense heat and drought stress of a North Carolina summer.
If you’ve been thinking about updating your landscape, filling an empty space, adding privacy, or replacing an old shrub, you don’t necessarily have to wait until spring.
Cooler Temperatures Mean Less Stress
Summer can be tough on a newly planted tree or shrub. High temperatures increase water loss and put additional stress on a plant that is already adjusting to its new location.
Fall brings cooler days and nights while the soil remains warm enough for root development. With less energy going toward new leaves and flowers, plants can begin concentrating on establishing their roots.
That gives them a head start before next summer arrives.
Fall Can Mean Less Watering
New plants still need consistent watering, especially during dry periods, but cooler temperatures generally mean moisture doesn’t evaporate from the soil as quickly as it does during summer.
That can make fall planting easier on both the plants and the homeowner.
Keep an eye on rainfall, though. Even during winter, newly planted trees and shrubs can need supplemental water during extended dry spells.
Get a Head Start on Spring
One of the biggest advantages of fall planting is what happens several months later.
Instead of planting in spring and asking a new plant to establish roots while simultaneously producing new growth, a fall-planted tree or shrub already has time in the ground.
As temperatures warm, it can be ready to put its energy into spring growth.
What Can You Plant in Fall?
Fall is a great time to consider adding:
- Evergreen shrubs
- Flowering shrubs
- Shade trees
- Ornamental trees
- Privacy screening plants
- Many native trees and shrubs
- Perennials
The right plant still depends on your individual property. Sun exposure, drainage, mature plant size, soil conditions, and available space should all be considered before planting.
That beautiful little shrub at the garden center may not stay little forever!
Don’t Forget the Mulch
After planting, add a layer of mulch or pine straw around the plant to help conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, and reduce weed growth.
Just remember not to pile mulch directly against the trunk or stems. Give the plant a little breathing room around its base.
