Many people assume that once the summer heat arrives, planting season is over. The truth is, you can absolutely plant during the summer—you just have to give your new plants a little extra attention while they establish.
Whether you’re adding colorful flowers, fresh shrubs, or a new tree to your landscape, proper watering is the key to helping them thrive.
Newly Planted vs. Established Plants
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is watering every plant in the landscape the same way. Newly planted plants have much different needs than those that have been established for months or years.
Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs
Freshly planted trees and shrubs need deep, consistent watering while their roots grow into the surrounding soil.
A good rule of thumb is:
- Water deeply 2–3 times per week during hot, dry weather.
- Water slowly so moisture reaches the entire root ball.
- Check the soil before watering—it should be moist several inches below the surface, not soggy.
Deep watering encourages roots to grow downward, making plants stronger and more drought tolerant over time.
Annual Flowers and Container Plants
Flowers in containers and hanging baskets dry out much faster than plants in the ground.
During periods of intense summer heat, they may need:
- Daily watering
- Sometimes twice a day during extended heat waves
Always water until excess water drains from the bottom of containers.
Established Landscape Plants
Once trees and shrubs have been in the ground for a year or more, they typically require much less frequent watering.
Instead of watering every day, give them a deep soaking during extended dry periods. This helps maintain healthy root systems without encouraging shallow root growth.
Water Early
The best time to water is early in the morning.
Morning watering:
- Reduces evaporation.
- Gives plants time to absorb moisture before the afternoon heat.
- Allows foliage to dry quickly, helping reduce the risk of disease.
If morning isn’t possible, evening is your next best option. Try to avoid watering during the hottest part of the afternoon, when much of the water evaporates before reaching the roots.
