As the temperatures cool and the leaves fall, November is a quieter month in the garden—but it’s an important time to prepare your landscape for winter and set yourself up for a beautiful spring. In the Sandhills region of North Carolina, our sandy soils and mild winters mean you can still get plenty done outdoors before the first hard frost. Here’s what to focus on this month:

🍁 1. Tidy Up and Mulch for Winter Protection

Rake and remove fallen leaves from your lawn and garden beds to prevent disease and mold. Once your beds are clean, add a fresh layer of mulch (2–3 inches) to help regulate soil temperature and conserve moisture through winter. Pine straw or hardwood mulch both work beautifully in our area.

🌿 2. Plant Trees, Shrubs, and Evergreens

November is one of the best months to plant in the Sandhills! The soil is still warm enough for root growth, but cooler air temperatures reduce stress on new plants. Consider planting:

  • Evergreen privacy screens like Murray Cypress or Emerald Green Arborvitae
  • Flowering shrubs such as Camellias and Sasanquas that bloom during fall and winter
  • Deciduous trees like Maples and Oaks while they’re dormant

Planting now allows roots to establish before the heat of next summer.

🌸 3. Add Color with Cool-Season Flowers

Don’t let your landscape go dull! November is perfect for planting pansies, violas, and snapdragons for cheerful color all winter long. Mix in ornamental kale or cabbage for interesting texture and frost-tolerant foliage.

🌾 4. Prep Your Lawn for Dormancy

If you have a warm-season lawn (Bermuda, Zoysia, or Centipede), it’s time to:

  • Avoid fertilizing with high-nitrogen products (they can promote growth at the wrong time)
  • Apply a pre-emergent to prevent winter weeds
  • Continue watering during dry spells until dormancy sets in

If you have fescue, you can overseed thin spots and keep mowing as needed until growth slows.

🧑‍🌾 5. Clean and Care for Tools

On a chilly day, take a little time to sharpen blades, oil tools, and clean up containers. This simple step saves time and frustration when spring rolls around.

🎄 6. Plan Ahead for Holiday Greens

If you enjoy decorating with natural greenery, keep an eye out for holly, cedar, and magnolia branches as you prune. These make stunning additions to holiday wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces!
